SUMMARY:Orfeo ed Eurodice performed by Exeter Opera Group
DESCRIPTION:Exeter Opera Group is a young group\, we have existed for a couple of years. It consists of local musicians\, mostly based in Devon. We used to perform a lot of charity concerts to support Ukrainian volunteers in the war. From last year we started staging operas\, Gluck’s ‘Orfeo ed Euridice’\, Purcel’s ‘Dido and Aeneas’. This autumn we are aiming to stage ‘Carmen in Stories’ based on G. Bizet’s opera ‘Carmen’\, and in winter next year Rossini’s ‘La Cenerentola’. \nIn between we are working on a new project called ‘Queens in Opera’. We have already performed 4 concerts in different venues\, including Exeter Castle and St. Nicholas Priory. \nThe story of the opera: \nThe great musician Orfeo mourns the death of his wife Euridice. Amore\, the God of Love\, tells Orfeo that the gods have granted him permission to journey down to Hades. If he can calm the Furies with his music\, he may lead Euridice back to the land of living – on the condition that he never once looks back at her on their journey. \nOrfeo appeases the Furies with his music and finds Euridice in Elysium. He begins to lead her back\, but she is distressed by his strange behaviour. She faints and Orfeo looks back; Euridice dies in his arms. Amore appears and consoles Orfeo. His fidelity now proven\, Euridice may be restored to him. Orfeo\, Euridice and Amore celebrate the power of love. \nIn our performance however we give our own interpretation to this beautiful story: Everything what happens to Orfeo\, is his imagination\, his illusion. Therefore we have given a subtitle to the opera ‘Ofeo’s Illusion’. \nActs 1 & 2 \nOrfeo is at the hospital. He is ill. He imagines that his beautiful wife Euridice has died. He also imagines that his doctor’s name is Amore\, probably because she cures him and every time she gives him an injection or a tablet\, he feels better. His imagination develops and he relates his situation to the myth of Orfeo: He must go to the Underworld\, talk to devils and furies\, ask them to let him into Elysium\, where Euridice is now living. In between some strange things happen the way we see our dreams: We see the people we know well quite differently\, the unrealistic events are acceptable\, because it is just an imagination\, a dream. Orfeo imagines he is in Elysium. He sees a beautiful Angel and he hears ethereal music. \n~Interval~ \nAct 3 \nOrfeo meets Euridice and asks her to go home with him. According to the rule\, he is not allowed to look at his wife. He therefore wears sunglasses. He\, however\, looks at his beautiful Euridice\, because he cannot resist his wife’s pleading to look at her. Euridice dies and Orfeo wants to commit suicide. Amore\, the doctor\, comes just in time and saves him from doing it. \nOrfeo recovers from his disease and from his illusion. All things become real now. DESCRIPTION:Tickets for this event are available from www.wegottickets.com and search for Cullompton. \nAlso tickets are available from Lord Fudges’ Little Cully Café \n  \n  \n \n  \nWe are absolutely delighted to welcome Brooke Sharkey to The Walronds for this concert. \nBrooke Sharkey\, an internationally renowned musician\, in concert with Isaks Island and Blythe Pepino. \nBrooke Sharkey was raised between France and England and is now currently based in Oslo. Starting her musical journey as a busker\, she has since released 2 Eps and 2 full length albums ‘One Dress’ (2012) and ‘Wandering Heart’ (V2 records- 2016) and travelled extensively playing her Anglo-french soul searching\, spacious and poetic songs. Brooke was featured in the FUTURE 50 article in The Guardian in  2016 about independent artists doing it their own way. She produces her music and collaborates with various artists and musicians adding to her unique vocal delivery and poetic lyrics\, reaching into the vaste yet intricate themes of loving\, longing\, letting go\, desire\, empowerment\, belonging\, beauty and the search for inner peace through voice\, presence and embodiment. \n‘An introspective sound adorned with emotional vocals and sliding string sections that create a tense air of melancholy that few others can master so simply and so elegantly\, Brooke Sharkey oozes a creativity that radiates emotion. She is a woman who bleeds artistry’ (Fresh beats) \nBrooke’s music has been played extensively on BBC radio 2\, Radio 6\, BBC Scotland\, Radio FIP (France) and Radio 1 Belgium with live sessions on NPO Radio 1 and 2 in The Netherlands. She has also captured the attention of The guardian\, Loud and quiet magazine\, Acoustic magazine and Maverick magazine and  has supported artists such as Thomas Dybdahl\, Ben Watt and french artist Tété\, co-headlining a show at The Union Chapel with Blick Bassy. \nBrooke is currently working on a new single with Blythe Pepino (Band: Mesadorm) and is crowdfunding for her new EP to be released in 2023. \nShe will be accompanied by Isaks Island & Blythe Pepino. \nThe concert will take place at 7.30 pm on 14th July 2023 as part of the Cullompton Arts Festival and will be held in a marquee in the attractive gardens of The Walronds. \nA licensed bar will be available. \nTickets are £10 each and are available from www.wegottickets.com – Search for Cullompton Events. \n  \n \n  \nSupported by Creative Cullompton \n
