5 Week Beginners Pottery Course

September 3 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, repeating until October 1, 2024

My name is Helen McCormick and I’m a local artist and teacher. I’ve been creating objects from clay for over 26 years, and I still absolutely love the process. I am passionate about teaching and have created this course to share my skills, knowledge and experience with anyone who would like to have a go for the first time or to develop their skills further.

My course is designed for complete beginners or for those who have used clay before but feel that they want to improve their knowledge and understanding of pottery/ceramics. During each session you will learn traditional hand-building techniques to create a series of objects, which will deepen your knowledge and understanding of how to manipulate the clay into successful outcomes, as well as glaze making and application. The course is split into 5 weekly 3 hour sessions every Tuesday starting on Tuesday 5th September.

The course will cover the following:

Session 1:

You will learn about different types of clay and how to create a beautiful pot/bowl using a pinch pot and coiling technique. By the end of this session, you will have 5 pots/bowls from 5 different clays, which you will glaze in week 5. You will also make some small test tiles from each clay, which you will use to test glaze in week 4.

Session 2:

You will learn slab building techniques and the different stages of how clay dries. Using this technique you will create a beautiful vase/house/object of your choice and how to decorate your object with decorating slips and a carving technique called sgraffito.

Session 3:

You will create a mug/jug using a slab building technique, and then learn how to pull handles out of clay and attach them to your object. Finally you will learn how to add decoration and pattern to the clay.

Session 4: During this session you will learn the basics about what glaze is, what glaze goes with what clay and how to make your own glaze. You will test your own glaze on your own test tiles to see the results. You will also learn about oxides and underglazes. There will also be other glazes available to try out.

Session 5: The final session will be on how to apply your glaze to your work. All the pieces you will have made during the course will be glazed in this session.

The dates for each session are:

Tuesday 3rd September 18:30 – 21:30

Tuesday 10th September 18:30 – 21:30

Tuesday 17th September 18:30 – 21:30

Tuesday 24th September 18:30 – 21:30

Tuesday 1st October 18:30 – 21:30

All tools, materials and information booklet will be provided. There will be opportunities to buy your own equipment and clay (just let me know). Tea and Coffee will be available throughout each session. The only thing you need to bring is an apron or wear old clothes if possible and a notepad and pen if you wish to take notes or have any questions you wish to ask me.

There is FREE parking at the Walronds. The carpark is located at the back of the building. To access the carpark you will need to turn up Tiverton Road off the High Street, and then turn left just before the fire station onto Shortlands Lane. It is a narrow lane and easily missed. Drive a few yards up the lane and you will see the sign for the carpark on the left. Turn left and follow the drive through the gate ahead. If you put Shortlands Lane Cullompton into google maps it will take you there or use this link https://goo.gl/maps/4kLQdvg12L4zbmap9

After each session, I will carefully take your work home and fire it in my kiln (unless you would like to keep working on it at home). Your work will be ready to collect approximately 6 weeks after the course has finished from The Walronds. I will let you know the date and time.
