An Evening of Songs including a piece about the Spanish Armada

July 7 @ 7:00 pm

£8.00

Please note the starting time of this event : 7.00 pm

Come along to join us for a fabulous evening of entertainment. South Devon Singers will be performing Armadadrama, a new work by Haines and will be supported by another music artist.

Originally composed as a children’s opera to mark the Spanish Armada’s quatercentenary in 1988, David Haines reworked Armadadrama for concert performance by adult choir in 2012, when it was performed in the Great Barn at Buckland Abbey. Through ‘snapshot’ scenes rather than continuous narrative, it highlights the tragic thread linking wars throughout human history, summarised in the closing lines:

We believed in the Holy War before, but now we realise that we’re the pawns in a deadly game, it seems,
In which the players are bishops and knights and kings and queens,
So convinced that they are right that they will maim and kill to bring the light of their truth to their victims
